Free Crochet Pattern: Baby Penguin

This chubby little penguin fits in the palm of your hand and makes a great wintery decoration. Try adding a keyring to the top to make the perfect portable friend to look after your keys!

Baby Penguin Crochet Pattern

 

You Will Need:

  • Aran yarn in black, white and grey
  • Embroidery thread or DK yarn in bright yellow
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • two 6mm toy safety eyes
  • yarn needle for sewing
  • toy stuffing
  • scissors to cut yarn
 

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US terminology.

Rnd – round

sc – single crochet

inc – single crochet increase

dec – single crochet decrease

slst – slip stitch

F/O – finish off

All pieces are crocheted in continuous rounds.
 

Body

Start with black yarn.

Rnd 1. 6sc in magic circle (6)

Rnd 2. 6inc (12)

Rnd 3. (inc, sc) x2, switch to white, inc, switch to black, sc, switch to white, inc, switch to black, (sc, inc) x2, sc (18)

Rnds 4-5. 6sc, switch to white, 6sc, switch to black, 6sc (18)

Switch to grey.

Rnd 6. 18sc (18)

Rnd 7. (inc, 2sc) x6 (24)

Rnds 8-10. 24sc (24)

Rnd 11. (dec, 2sc) x6 (18)

Rnd 12. (dec, sc) x6 (12)

Insert the safety eyes between rounds 4 & 5, three stitches apart.

Using yellow embroidery thread or yarn, embroider a beak in between the eyes.

Fill the body with the toy stuffing.

Rnd 13. 6dec (6)

F/O and sew the opening closed.

 

Flippers (make 2)

Use grey yarn.

Rnd 1. 6sc in magic circle (6)

Rnds 2-4. 6sc (6)

Do not stuff. Instead, fold the flipper flat and crochet 3sc across the top, going through both layers.

F/O, leaving a length of yarn for sewing.

 

Feet (make 2)

Use black yarn.

Rnd 1. 6sc in magic circle (6)

Rnd 2. 6sc (6)

F/O, leaving a length of yarn for sewing.

 

Assembly

Sew the feet onto the body along round 12, one stitch apart. Make sure they line up so that they stick out at the front of the penguin.

Sew the flippers onto each side of the body along round 6. They should line up with each side of the white section.

 
 

Now your baby penguin is complete!
